I was off to a flying start for our first official competition round of the finals. I managed to birdie the first hole, par the second with a fantastic Micklesonesque flop shot for up and down par and didn't find the desert until the 4th hole! When I did find the desert, I managed to have great difficulty in leaving it and it almost always ended up with a blob. The sand was very fine and fluffy and I just could not figure out how to play shots from it. "Just don't go in it" I hear you say? I play off 12, not 2 and only dream of 'fairways and greens only' golf!
The front nine holes were fairly kind to me and I managed to score 18 points with two birdies and two blobs! I was feeling pretty good about my game.
The back nine bit me hard though and I scored a measly 9 points with four more blobs and was in the waste areas far too regularly. I did manage one more par though.
There were four par3 holes and all but one played over 200 yards into the wind. They were extremely tough and I managed to score three points on them collectively.
A total of four pars and two birdies didn't counteract the six blobs and six bogeys I amassed throughout my round.
I quite enjoyed the challenge of the course and can imagine that as the course continues to develop (there was some construction [minor irrigation work!]) and mature it will be an awesome test of anyone's golf.
The guys on the trip were turning out to be an amazing bunch and apart from the great golf courses, the friendships and banter and support are one thing I will always remember and cherish from this incredible trip.
Here are some of the photos I took from our day.
More about that in my next instalment!
