My Golfing History

I first remember grabbing a golf club in my late teens or early twentys.
I tried to belt the cover off every single ball from day one and periodically became so despondent and depressed with a slice which traversed two or three fairways. As a result of that slice and the inability to choose only one main hobby/sport I stopped playing golf pretty regularly too.
I became more serious about golf when I stopped racing motorbikes and started to concentrate on learning how to swing the club properly and bought myself the 'Golf Instruction Manual by Steve Newell and some pretty decent clubs in 2005 from the proshop at the Torquay Golf Club in Victoria, Australia.
I managed to hand in 5 cards and received a handicap of 22. Before I could compete in any competitions, I dislocated my knee due to a snapped anterior cruciate ligament. That injury and the following surgery stopped me from playing and I let my membership lapse while rehabilitating. Just as I was ready to get back into golf, I removed the end of one of my fingers on my left hand which set me back a little bit more. Since then, I have got married, moved to the UK, become a Dad twice and generally let life get in the way of golf.
After the birth of our second bambino, my wife and I decided that we needed to do stuff, so she joined the gym and I joined at Coed-y-Mwstwr golf club.
It's been nine months and I have played lots of golf and am yet to injure myself! Things are looking up! (still injury free after 18 months! 03/03/2014)
Before joining at CYM, I enjoyed social and trial golf at St Mary's, Pyle and Kenfig, Southerndown, Royal Porthcawl, Cottrell Park and Morriston golf clubs.
I really enjoy playing golf in the UK and I'm looking forward to reducing my handicap to single figures and competing around the UK as an amateur golfer.
It's been just over 14 months now and I have reduced my handicap to 11.1 and have qualified for the finals of the League to Dubai too!
Single figures aren't too far away now and the goal of scratch or better by May 22 2015 (40th birthday) is still seeming possible!

The league to Dubai finals were amazing!. My golf has Plateau'd since being cut to 11.3, single figures by summer is seeming a bit tight, but still aiming and working for it!

  1. Hey Clayts, Wonder what you've been upto. Gliding is alot more time consuming than Golf. Hope you and the Family are doing well?

    1. Hi Dave hope you and yours are well too. Me and Mine are great! I'm sure I could take up as much or more time with golf if I tried, but I'm trying to stay involved in family stuff more. Hopefully bump into you on a slope again one day, or bring your bats to Wales for a summer hit if it looks like the wind isn't going to play ball for a comp.
